The hike from Valbona to Theth is the crown jewel of Albanian tourism, attracting thousands of international adventurers every year. Traversing the heart of the Accursed Mountains, this spectacular trail offers breathtaking panoramic views, jagged limestone peaks, and an authentic taste of traditional highlander culture.
To help you plan the perfect journey, here is everything you need to know about the schedule, trail conditions, and how to manage your logistics seamlessly.
Approx. 17 km from trailhead to Theth center.
Around 6–8 hours, depending on pace and photo stops
About 800m up and 1,000m down from Valbona to Theth.
Valbona Pass (Qafa e Valbonës) is at 1,795m.
Moderate to challenging, requiring stamina and boots.
Most travelers experience this hike as part of the famous “Loop” starting and ending in Shkodër. Here is how the seamless connection with NordWest makes it happen:
Start early to beat the heat, especially in July–August.
Flat start along Valbona riverbed for 1–1.5 hours to Rrogam, a gentle warm-up.
After Rrogam, the trail enters a steep forest with shaded beech and pine trees.
Rustic mountain cafés in the forest (like Simoni Café) offer drinks and rest stops.
Above the treeline, a final climb to Valbona Pass (1,795m) with stunning 360° views.
Steep descent to Theth with loose gravel, ending in forest and the village church.
Loose Gravel (Scree):
The descent toward Theth has loose scree that can cause slips. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support and trekking poles are highly recommended for balance and joint protection.
Water Management:
There are a couple of cafés on the way up, but no reliable water sources near the summit or during the descent. Carry at least 2–3 liters of water.
Unpredictable Mountain Weather:
At nearly 1,800m, weather can change within minutes. Even in summer, sudden rain or storms are possible, so pack a waterproof jacket and a warm layer.
Navigation:
The trail is well-marked with Red-White-Red signs on rocks and trees. Still, download offline maps (e.g., Maps.me or Wikiloc) as mobile signal can be weak or unavailable.
The biggest dilemma for hikers is what to do with their large suitcases or heavy travel backpacks. Carrying 15 kg over a 1,800-meter mountain pass turns a beautiful hike into a grueling chore.
